Stranded Lives (ongoing) |
The 1947 partition of India displaced between 11 to 18 million people and according to the 1951 census 670000 Bihari refugees went to East Bengala, that later become East Pakistan and then Bangladesh.
The Bihari ethnic minority were subject to persecution during and after the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and today, even though many Biharis have assimilated into the Bengali population, at least 250000 people are still in Bangladesh urban refugee camps. The largest one is "Geneva Camp" where 50000 thousand people lives in an overcrowded and undeveloped environment. Large families up to 10 people live in a single room and one latrine is shared by 90 people. When i went to Geneva Camp for the first time, i was so fascinated by the contrast between the beauty i was seeing and the poor condition of the environment and i decided to start to document the daily life of this people who, after 47 years since the foundation of Geneva Camp, are still fighting to conserve their dignity despite the discrimination suffered. |
